Where to Recycle:

Fluorescent Light Bulbs

You can recycle Fluorescent Lighbulbs at the HHW Facility.

Fluorescent Lightbulbs contain mercury- so they should be treated as Household Hazardous Waste.

If you have broken a bulb, please follow the EPA’s instructions for easy, safe cleanup: http://www.epa.gov/cfl/cflcleanup.html

Why do people say Compact Fluorescent Bulbs are so environmentally friendly, even though they contain toxic mercury?

Despite the mercury leaked from broken bulbs, “the use of Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs actually helps reduce total mercury emissions in the U.S. because of their significant energy savings.  Using energy-saving CFLs reduces demand for electricity, which in turn reduces the amount of coal burned by power plants, which reduces emissions of mercury when the coal is burned”. EPA Fluorescent Lightbulbs and Mercury
